An enjoyable evening of fellowship and the opportunity to talk about membership trends as well as learn more about The Tall Ship charity.

Chrichowell's proactive look at the future in terms of membership and service to the community is to the enormous credit to the Club and an example to others - and I gave the correct answer to where the question of which country in our District as the greatest proportion of Rotarians with respect to the overall population, must prove something about me!

The minus 7 degrees on the return journey was something I could have done without, thankfully the roads were reasonably dry.

An evening at The Boars Head, the pub dates from 1875 and was built by the Trecastle Estate for nearby tinplate workers.

The interior consists of a small, but well stocked bar with stools and seating surrounding it. When I visited this area was very popular with the locals. on each side of the entrance hall are rooms containing a mixture of seating and a fireplace. One is more suitable for dining although both have a homely feel to them rather than being in a pub.

The 'homely feel' is a good description of the Club, I felt immediately at home with its members who have a realistic view of Rotary and how they can serve both their local community as well as the international community.

A very pleasant evening on a very chilly night.

Wales' National Holocaust Memorial Day Service -The Welsh Assembly Government and Cardiff Council hosted Wales’ National Service to mark Holocaust Memorial Day at City Hall, Cardiff to which Kay & I attended.

On this day we honour the survivors of regimes of hatred and take the opportunity to reflect on the ways in which we live our lives today. The Untold Stories theme for 2011 included reflections by students from local schools and Rabbi Meyer H May, Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Rotary is proud to have worked with the The 2012 Commonwealth Judo Championships organizers in order to collect for Polio Eradication.

The Championships are being held in the Donald Gordon Theatre at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay, Wales. This is the first sporting event ever to be held at this famous location.The competitions will be broadcast live via video stream on the internet as well as being filmed by Fighting Films and broadcast by SkySports for television

training event for incoming Rotary
district governors.
"Peace, in all of the ways that
we can understand it, is a real goal and
a realistic goal for Rotary," he said.
"Peace is not something that can only
be achieved through agreements, by
governments, or through heroic
struggles. It is something that we can
find and that we can achieve, every
day and in many simple ways."
Peace has different meanings for different people, Tanaka said.
"No definition is right, and no definition is wrong," he said.
"However we use the word, this is what peace means for us.
"No matter how we use, or understand the word, Rotary can help
us to achieve it," he added.
TO BE USEFUL TO OTHERS
Tanaka, a businessman from the greater Tokyo metropolitan
area, shared how becoming a Rotarian broadened his understanding of
the world. After joining the Rotary Club of Yashio, in 1975, he said, he
began to realize that his life's purpose was not to make more money,
but to be useful to other people.
"I realized that by helping others, even in the simplest of ways, I
could help to build peace," Tanaka said.

He noted that the Japanese tradition of putting the
needs of society above the needs of the individual helped
his country rebuild after the tsunami and earthquake in
March.
"This is a lesson that I think the whole world can learn
from, in a positive way. When we see the needs of others as
more important than our own needs -- when we focus our
energies on a shared goal that is for the good of all -- this
changes everything," he said. "It changes our priorities in a
completely fundamental way. And it changes how we
understand the idea of peace."
Tanaka will ask Rotarians to focus their energy on
supporting the three priorities of the RI Strategic Plan, he

He added that he will ask the
incoming leaders to promote three
Rotary peace forums, to be held in
Hiroshima, Japan; Berlin, Germany;
and Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.

IT IS A GREAT HONOR to be here, standing before all of
you: our new district governors for the 2012-13 Rotary year.
Rotary has been at the center of my life for many years. I did
not know it at the time, but the day I joined Rotary in 1975 was
the day I set my first step on the path to a different future.
Before I joined Rotary, my view of the world was narrow. I was
the fourth of eight children. We were poor, and so was nearly
everyone we knew. I had never met anyone who was not
Japanese.
Every week, I walked with my mother 20 kilometers to the
market, to sell vegetables. This was as far as I went, and as
much as I saw of the world beyond my village.
I dreamed of travel. I dreamed of seeing other cities, other
countries. I wondered what they were like.
Since then, I have traveled a great deal. I have seen more of the world than I ever
imagined. But nothing has broadened my vision as much as the perspective I have
gained through Rotary.
Before I was a Rotarian, I saw only what was in front of me. I saw my business, my
family, my customers, and my competitors. When I traveled, I saw only what I knew
to look at. But I did not see beyond that. I did not look for context. I did not look past
what I believed was relevant to me.
I REALIZED THAT BEING OF USE WAS IMPORTANT
One day, I was asked to join the Rotary Club of Yashio. And it was two years later
that someone came and spoke to us about the idea of vocational service. From that
day, slowly, I began to change. I realized that the purpose of my life was not just to
earn more, to sell more, to make my business better than anyone else’s. I realized
that I wanted to have better goals and higher goals — both personally and
professionally. I realized that for me, the most important thing in life was being
useful to other people.
And I realized that by helping others, even in the simplest of ways, I could help to
build peace.
We hear the word peace every day. We hear it in the news, we use it in
conversation, and we talk about it a great deal in Rotary. But most of us spend very
little time thinking about what peace is, and what that word means.
On its simplest level, peace can be defined by what it is not. It is a state of no war,
no violence, and no fear. It means that you are not in danger of hunger or
persecution or the suffering of poverty.

WHAT PEACE IS NOT
It is a state of no war,
no violence,
and no fear.
It means that you are not in danger of hunger
or persecution
or the suffering of poverty.
But we can also define peace by what it is, and by what it can be.
 Peace can mean freedom of thought and of speech,
 freedom of opinion and of choice,
 and the ability for self determination.
 It can mean security,
 confidence in the future:
 a life and home in a stable society.
On a more abstract level,
 peace can mean a sense of happiness,
 of inner serenity, of calm.
The truth is that peace means different things to different people. No definition is
right, and no definition is wrong. However we use the word, this is what peace
means for us. And however we use the word, however we understand peace,
Rotary can help us to achieve it.
Rotary helps us to meet the basic needs of others: to provide health care,
sanitation, food, and education when and where it is most needed.
It helps to meet the inner needs as well, for friendship, connection, and caring.
And Rotary helps us to build peace in its most traditional sense, by reducing the
causes of conflict. It builds bridges of friendship and tolerance among people and
nations. It helps us to understand each other.
Through our service, we learn that the problems that may seem large to us are
really very small. We learn empathy for others. We come closer to people who
seem very different from us. And we begin to understand how alike we really are.
COOPERATION IS MORE PRODUCTIVE THAN CONFLICT
Through our Rotary service, we learn that cooperation is more productive than
conflict. We learn to value each other, as human beings with human strengths and
weaknesses. We learn that every one of us has something to give, and every one
has something to teach.
To me, Service Above Self is more than just a motto. It is a way of life — one that
will make any life richer and more meaningful.
Putting Service Above Self allows us to focus our energies on what is truly
important. We put the common good above our own. We prioritize others’ needs
over our own desires. we think less about Ourselves and more about what is best
for everyone. And in this way, we help to build the foundation for a more peaceful
world.
This is why, in 2012-13, our Rotary theme will be Peace Through Service.

Can a businessmen’s club eradicate polio from the world?

IT IS a year since the last case of polio was diagnosed in India. That is not enough to pronounce the country polio-free—three clear years are the conventional period required for that to happen. But it is a good start. And if India really is clear, then what was once a global scourge will now be endemic to a mere three countries: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. The number of people infected, meanwhile, has dropped from 350,000 in 1988 to 650 last year.
All this is in large part thanks to the efforts of Rotary International. In 1985, after a successful pilot study in the Philippines, this businessmen’s club cum global charity announced a plan to eradicate polio by vaccinating every child under five at risk of catching it. The estimate then was that it would cost $120m. Some $800m of Rotary money later (plus a lot from other sources), the virus is still out there, but its remaining hidey-holes tell their own story: where civil disorder is rife, medicine is hard.
On January 17th Rotary announced it had raised yet another $200m. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will contribute a further $405m, and the pressure will thus be kept up. John Germ, one of Rotary’s trustees, thinks that if all goes well 2016 might be the first year when no new cases are reported. That would, though, mean spending more than $1 billion a year between now and then.
The inspiration for Rotary’s campaign against polio came from the eradication of smallpox. Like polio, smallpox was a viral disease for which effective, easily administered vaccines existed. And crucially, like polio, smallpox had only one animal host: Homo sapiens. In principle, then, extermination should be possible. The practice, however, has turned out rather different.
First, unlike smallpox, polio viruses can survive for long periods outside a host—for instance in sewage. Second, when the campaign began in earnest there were three main varieties of polio, each of which required a specially tailored vaccine. Focusing effort on one of these strains often led to the resurgence of another. Third, besides the inevitable difficulties of working in places that have poor medical infrastructure, the campaign ran into some specific human problems. The most notorious of these was the rumour, spread in 2003 by certain religious leaders in Nigeria, that the vaccine would sterilise girls and was part of an American plot to rid the world of Muslims. This helps explain why polio persists in Nigeria.
That polio can actually be eradicated is suggested by the elimination, in 1999, of one of the three strains. Whether the resources needed to do so might be better spent elsewhere, though, is a matter of debate. Some would prefer to see a shift to policies that improve overall health, including investing in decent sanitation and clean water.
The response to that is that if you remove the specific pressure on polio it will simply bounce back. Moreover, in practice, a synthesis between the two positions is emerging. According to Mr Germ there is already a debate within Rotary about what to do next. Providing clean water and improving maternal and child health are popular options.
One thing everyone wants to avoid, though, is what happened after smallpox was eliminated. Then, the infrastructure of health workers and clinics that had been created to detect and fight the disease was allowed to evaporate. Had it been used instead to focus on polio, that illness, too, might have been vanquished by now.

With adjudicators such as Dennis O'Niell and Ross Leadbetter from Only Men Aloud the competitor's confidence as well as musical skill were fully tested.

1. Friendship:-In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs- the need for friendship and fellowship. It is one of two reasons why Rotary began in 1905.

2. Business Development:- The second original reason for Rotary’ beginning is business development. Everyone needs to network. Rotary consist of a cross section of every business community. Rotarians help each other and collectively help others.

3.Personal Growth & Development:- Membership in Rotary continues one’s growth and education in human relations and personal development.

4. Leadership:- Rotary is an organization of leaders and successful people. Serving in Rotary positions is like a college Education. Learning how to motivate, influence, and lead leaders.

5.Citizenship in the Community:- Membership in a Rotary club makes one a better community citizen. The average Rotary club consists of the most active citizens conscious of community development.

6.Continuing Education:- Each week at Rotary there is a program designed to keep one informed about what is going on in the community, nation, and world. Each meeting provides an opportunity of personal enlightenment on variety of timely topics.

7.Fun:- Rotary is fun, fellowship and enjoyment. Each meeting is fun. The club service projects are fellowships. Social activities are enjoyment.

8.Public Speaking Skills:-Many individuals who joined rotary were afraid to speak in public. Rotary develops confidence and skill in public communication and the opportunity to practice and perfect these skills.

9.Citizenship in the world:- Every Rotarian wears a pin that says “Rotary International.”The Globe is dotted with Rotary clubs. Every Rotarian is welcome – even encouraged – to attend clubs meetings abroad. This means instant friends around the Globe.

10. Assistance when Traveling:- Because there are Rotary clubs everywhere, many a Rotarian in need of a doctor, lawyer, hotel, dentist, advice, etc., while traveling has found assistance through Rotary.

11.Entertainment:- Every Rotary club and District has fellowship activities that provide diversion in one’s business life. Conferences, conventions, assemblies, and institutes provide entertainment in addition to Rotary knowledge, education, and service.

12.The Development of Social Skills:- Every week and at various events and functions, Rotary develops one’s personality, social skills and human relations skills. Rotary is for people who like people.

13.Family Programs:- Rotary provides one of the world’s largest youth exchange programs; high school and college clubs for future Rotarians; opportunities for spouse involvement; and a host of activities designed to help family members in growth and the development of family values.

14.Vocational Skills:- Every Rotarian is expected to take part in the growth and development of his or her own profession or vocation; to serve on committees and to teach youth about one’s job or vocation. Rotary helps to make one a better doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc.

15.The Development of Ethics:- Rotarians practice a 4-Way Test that governs one’s ethical standards. Rotarians are expected to be ethical in business and personal relationships.

An interesting and intriguing New Year article highlighting the successful polio eradication campaign. Again, there is not much lauding of Rotary's corporate programme though there is mention of an unnamed Rotary Club engaging with locals to discuss basic hygiene with school children. But the reader is possibly left wondering what connection the Rotary Club has with the global polio eradication campaign - or probably they won't see the connection. Another nebulous narrative.•

Moradabad is a nondescript and scruffy city, 110 miles north of the Indian capital Delhi. Few have heard of it, despite its population of nearly five million. But it is about to become the site of an astonishing victory against a terrible disease.
Moradabad has long been the centre of one of the most stubborn concentrations of polio in India.
The disease is passed on by person-to-person contact and, with Moradabad's poor inhabitants frequently travelling far across the country in search of work, outbreaks elsewhere have often been traced back to the city.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) stipulates that three years must pass without any cases of polio occurring before a region can be declared polio-free.
Moradabad, which only recently had 60-80 cases a year, is expected to qualify in 2012.
"This will be a wonderful thing – for us, for India, for the people of Moradabad," said Dr Mohammed Arif, a public health specialist and organiser of anti-polio campaigns in the area.
There is a bigger national milestone on the horizon. If in India as a whole there are no more confirmed cases before 13 January, the country will have completed its first year without a new victim.
And if polio is gone from India, the only countries where the disease is still endemic would be Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
India's likely achievement would be a big step towards the eradication of a global disease – the second after smallpox, which was officially defeated worldwide in 1979.
"That would really be something to be happy about," said Arif.

A joint celebration of Christmas by the Rotary Clubs of Pembroke, Tenby, Saundersfoot and Narbeth & Whitland plus the associated Inner Wheel Clubs, also an opportunity to chat to PDG Stuart & AG Chris about the RIBI Reorganization proposals.

St Mary's Church, Tenby is a church located in the centre of the town of Tenby in Pembrokeshire, western Wales. The church is in the Diocese of Saint David's within the Church in Wales, and members of the Anglican Communion.

There is believed to have been a church on the site since Norman times, but most of what remains dates from the 13th century building and subsequent additions in the 14th and 15th centuries.

The 13th century chancel has a 'wagon' roof and the panelled ceiling has 75 bosses carved with a variety of foliage designs, grotesques, fishes and a mermaid. St. Thomas' Chapel was added in the mid-15th century, and the St. Nicholas Chapel was added in c. 1485. The spire was also a 15th century addition. Inside the church is a 15th century font and a 15th century bell with the letters 'Sancta Anna'.

The tower is positioned to one side of the chancel and dates from the late 13th century. The first floor served as a chapel, and still has a stone altar and piscina in place.

In two weeks time Christmas Day will be drawing to a close, it was therefore extremely enjoyable to join the RC's of Carmarthen & Carmarthen Tywi, plus the Inner Wheel, for their evening Nine Lessons & Carols Service split equally between English & Welsh (which stretched my linguistic skills to the limit and beyond) and in accord with the King James Bible - a great evening.

"LLANGUNNOR (LLAN-GYNNOR), a parish, comprising the Upper and Lower divisions in the hundred of KIDWELLY, union and county of CARMARTHEN, SOUTH WALES, 1 mile (E.) from Carmarthen; containing 1228 inhabitants. This parish is beautifully situated on the river Towy, by which it is separated from the borough of Carmarthen; and is traversed by the great turnpike-road from that town, through Golden Grove, to Llandilo-Vawr; by the mail-road to Swansea; and by another turnpike-road to the same place, passing through Kidwelly and Llanelly . . . and comprises, according to computation, 5770 acres, of which 1400 are arable, 4200 pasture, and 170 woodland . . . The lands, with the exception of a small portion, are inclosed and cultivated; and the soil, though varied, is generally fertile, producing wheat, barley, oats, clover, and hay. . . The church, dedicated to St. Cynyr, is a neat edifice, appropriately fitted up for the performance of divine service, and, though possessing no architectural details of importance, derives from its beautiful situation an interesting and romantic appearance. . . ** The Presbyterian Church of Wales (Welsh: Eglwys Bresbyteraidd Cymru), also known as The Calvinistic Methodist Church (Yr Eglwys Fethodistaidd Galfinaidd), is a denomination of Protestant Christianity. It was born out of the Welsh Methodist revival and the preaching of Hywel Harris Howell Harris in the 18th century and seceded from the Church of England in 1811. It formally formed itself into a separate body in 1823 with the drawing up of its Confession of faith and produced its own monthly periodical Y Cenhadwr. It is distinguished from the Methodism of John Wesley by the Calvinistic nature of its theology.

Llancaiach Fawr was an ideal venue to join the Mayor of Caerphilly at her Carol Service. It is encouraging the the closure of Caerphilly Rotary is recognized as a blow to the community.

Llancaiach Fawr is situated in South East Wales in the small valley of the Nant Caeach, a stream from which it takes its name. The house is mainly of the early 16th century, with early 17th-Century modifications. In some features, such as the placing of the main entrance and storeyed porch at one end of the building, it resembles Y Fan in Caerphilly.

Llancaiach Fawr Manor was built on the site of an earlier medieval dwelling in the heart of the historic Rhymney Valley in South Wales and it predates the Acts of Union between Wales and England and was mentioned in John Leland’s Itinerary of 1537.

What is World AIDS Day?

World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988.

Why is World AIDS Day important?
More than 90,000 people are currently living with HIV in the UK and globally an estimated 33.3 million people have HIV. More than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007 have died from the virus, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

Today, many scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. But despite this, people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others from HIV, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with HIV. An opportunity to enhance Rotary understanding at the University of Cardiff's Glamorgan Building.

The Consular Association was formed over 80 years ago, and was known as the Cardiff Consular Association until shortly after the National Assembly of Wales was established in 1999. A Welsh Consular Corps was acknowledged by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2006.

All Consular appointments are made on the authority of the respective Governments, and are confirmed by a Letter of Appointment signed by the Head of the Sending State or its Foreign Minister, after having been approved by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The Welsh Diplomatic Corps now includes the representatives of 29 countries, 28 of them are based in Wales, namely Belarus, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Iceland, Jordan, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lesotho, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand and Tunisia. The Welsh Affairs Officer of the United States of America is based at the U.S. Embassy in London.
